What to expect at concerts
The Isaac Stern Auditorium sits in the heart of Manhattan — two blocks south of Central Park and a few blocks north of Times Square. It covers over 27,000 square feet of some of the world’s most premium real estate space.
Housed within Carnegie Hall, the building consists of three halls:
- The Isaac Stern Auditorium is the leading and largest space, with 2,804 seats
- Zankel Hall’s 599 seats provide a setting for more intimate shows
- The Weill Recital Hall has 268 seats and hosts smaller events.
Outside, Carnegie Hall stands out among downtown Manhattan’s skyscrapers and dazzling lights. Its red brick and terracotta exterior create a welcoming, classy vibe as soon as you see it.
Guests enter the hall through the Box Office lobby on 57th Street. Immediately, the three-tier lobby makes visitors feel like they have truly entered a legendary music performance venue, with a strong classical feel to all furnishings. Lines can be longer close to the show’s start time, so please arrive well in advance.
Once you’ve passed through the ticket check and security screening, you will enter the Isaac Stern Auditorium. It feels bright and airy — with a gold and white decorated ceiling, rich red seating, golden lighting, and marble touches. Carved walls surround the stage, continuing the Renaissance vibe.
During performances, you will be expected to join in with the general etiquette expected of classical events. Applause is encouraged following the display, but it may distract performers during the show. If you’re in doubt, just follow the rest of the crowd’s lead. If you leave your seat at any point, you might be held in the lobby until a break in the performance.
